Myofunctional Therapy

Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) are disorders pertaining to the face and mouth and may affect, directly and indirectly, chewing, swallowing, speech, occlusion, temporomandibular joint movement, oral hygiene, stability of orthodontic treatment, facial esthetics, and facial skeletal growth. Most OMDs can be easily assessed by dentists, dental hygienists and orthodontists and, in many cases, they can be prevented, especially in young children with baby teeth still present, thus promoting a more harmonious growth of the facial structure. When OMDs are identified in older children, teenagers, and adults, a multidisciplinary approach of their treatment is most likely needed, by involving orthodontist, the myofunctional therapist, the dental hygienist and other professionals such as ear-nose-throat specialists, allergists, and osteopathic physicians to name a few.

Myofunctional therapy addresses improper tongue posture and orofacial muscle function that can contribute to issues like mouth breathing, snoring, and even orthodontic relapse. Our Frisco team incorporates targeted exercises to retrain oral muscles, supporting better breathing, swallowing, and overall oral health. Orofacial therapy is painless and the exercises are relatively simple.
